EP61: The In-Between Projects That Keep Refit Life Moving
While waiting on weather and parts, we tackle the in-between projects that quietly move our refit forward — restoring systems and livability one job at a time.
After 18 months of refit life — and counting — not every episode can be about a big, clean milestone. Some weeks are about waiting on weather windows. Others are about delayed parts. And most of the time, progress happens in the quieter spaces between the major projects.
In EP61, we focus on the “in-between” work — the essential jobs that keep the boat moving steadily toward being livable and functional again, even when the headline projects are on pause.

Episode Summary
In EP61 of Sailing Roam, we tackle a series of smaller but essential projects that collectively move our refit forward. While waiting on parts and better weather, we focus on restoring systems and spaces that bring the boat back to life — one task at a time.
These aren’t the kinds of jobs that make big announcements, but they’re the ones that turn a stripped-out boat into a functioning home again.
Why These Projects Matter
Long refits aren’t a straight line. Big milestones often depend on factors you can’t control, but there’s always something that needs attention on a boat. These in-between projects are how momentum is maintained — psychologically and practically.
Each task in this episode removes friction from daily life aboard and sets the stage for the larger systems still to come.
Remounting the Davits
With earlier refit work complete, we reinstall the davits — restoring an important piece of deck functionality. It’s a reminder that progress sometimes looks like putting things back where they belong.
Upgrading the Freshwater System
We install a new freshwater pressure pump, choosing a shallow well pump instead of a typical marine unit. The goal is improved pressure, reliability, and serviceability — a practical upgrade that directly affects everyday comfort aboard.
Beginning AC Wiring in One Hull
While full system commissioning is still ahead, we begin laying the groundwork for AC power by starting the wiring in one hull. It’s early progress, but it’s foundational — and it turns plans into something tangible.
Replacing the Shower Sump Boxes
We remove the old sump boxes and replace them with smart drains and dedicated pumps. The result is a simpler, more reliable setup with fewer failure points — exactly the kind of improvement you appreciate most when things don’t go wrong.
Reinstalling the Galley Cabinets
Reinstalling the galley cabinets is a surprisingly big psychological win. With plumbing and wiring complete, the galley becomes fully functional again — a major step toward making the boat feel like a home instead of a construction site.
Progress Isn’t Always Loud
EP61 is a reminder that meaningful progress doesn’t always come with dramatic moments. Sometimes it shows up as steady work, finished spaces, and systems quietly coming back online.
After a year and a half of refitting, episodes like this help reaffirm that even when big projects stall, forward motion continues.
What Comes Next
As weather windows open and parts arrive, attention will return to the larger milestones. Until then, we’ll keep tackling the work that brings Roam closer to being ready — one project at a time.
